The hummingbird. The fox and the big cat.

Trapped in the tears of a heartbroken mermaid is the spirt of a hummingbird, a fox and a big cat.

Each held in a piece of amber. Washed up onto the shores of Lithuania, from the depths of the Baltic Sea. Collected by villagers. Sold to jewellers. Bought by a godmother. Handed to an orphaned soul.

The first a ring at sixteen. Pure tears. No animal spirit. Only the wild yearning of a broken hearted mermaid. Too big. Too old fashioned. Not now. Not cool. Put away and carried through travels and new homes, kept out of love. Somehow it had hooked the heart.

When the eyelids of a godmother open no more. Two necklaces and a brooch are gifted. Worn with love, next to the heart of the one, once orphaned. Not far from the mermaid’s ring. Resting in the evening in a wooden box. Days pass.

The warmth of a heart no longer lost, begins to melt the amber, changing its shape. Until one night, the amber releases the curious spirit of a hummingbird, the wild nurturing of a leopard, and the instincts and visionary nature of a fox. The spirits dance on the sheets in the night. Breathed in to mix among the dreams of the grieving. Changing her shape.

When eyelids open, the world has changed colour for the one who carries the hummingbird, the fox and the big cat wherever she walks.
